Arup Deutschland GmbH wins the German Lighting Design Award in the Refurbishment category for the Neue Nationalgalerie project. Commissioned with the lighting design, Arup’s task was to develop solutions that meet the curatorial, conservation, functional, technical and energy-efficient requirements of a modern museum, taking into account the original lighting concept. A particular challenge here was to meet the requirements of historic preservation and architecture.
Within the scope of the lighting design, mawa realized the sophisticated installation of high-quality LED technology while preserving the original appearance of the lamp. Around 3,000 lighting points were removed from the building in various states of preservation, then professionally refurbished by mawa and brought up to the latest state of the art.
All of the building’s original light fixtures were replaced with combinations of LED modules, reflectors and diffusers. Great importance was placed by the designers on high color rendering and closely selected color consistency. This gives the lighting a harmonious effect throughout the house and supports as authentic an impression of the art as possible.
The color temperature alone was deliberately differentiated. While the exhibition rooms shine in a neutral 3000 K, warm white 2700 K is used in the ancillary areas.
