Black exposed brick on the outside, bright lightness on the inside: designed by the Kernser studio architektur3 ag, the stylish building rises up on an east-facing slope. Once inside the detached house or on one of the terraces, a fantastic view of the lake and mountains opens up. The architects worked with large window areas in order to open up these views generously and to make the rooms as spacious as possible.
Lights by Nimbus pick up on the interplay of rich black and light tones: On the living floor, Nimbus Q FOUR lamps correspond with the black kitchen fronts. In the bathroom and bedroom, lights from the Nimbus CUBIC family set light accents. A total of twelve different Nimbus lamp models are also used in the other rooms. The interplay of all components creates an all-round balanced, elegant atmosphere in the rooms, flanked almost everywhere by the picturesque panorama.

Back to Nature: Lamps made from natural materials

Lighting designers and architects are faced with the special challenge of integrating light not only functionally. Light is a design element that is an important addition to the overall concept. It is not just a question of its effect in the room, the mood it creates or the function it must fulfil. The light source itself must also fit seamlessly into the outdoor area.

Classic shapes such as lanterns or simple bollards are far from being obsolete here. They have something original and historic about them – and, depending on the material and design, take you back to a long time ago when fire still burned in their midst instead of LEDs.

Today, however, the return to the original is no longer only reflected in the shape and colour of the lamps. Today, the trend is clearly towards unusual and, above all, natural materials. This starts with the look and ends with the “building material” of the lamp body.

Heavy materials such as stone or concrete can be found here, but also filigree glass in a completely new look. In any case, however, materials that belong naturally in nature and the garden.

What could be more pristine than basalt stone? The heavy material that literally sprouts directly from the earth stands for an inimitable divergence. The destructive power of magma is contrasted by the creative power of its solid form – basalt. This is the only way basalt could become the most widespread rock in the world: on land as well as underwater – in some cases even further. Because basalt rock is also found on the Moon and Mars and other terrestrial planets. With the SLV LISENNE lamp family, you can now bring the original rock into the garden and outdoor area. Basalt stone forms the solid base of the outdoor lamps.

The SLV ARROCK series is an equally extraordinary combination. In a modern look, natural stone together with stainless steel form an extraordinary pair. The angular design emphasises the solid character of the stone and the indirect light also plays its part.

Polycarbonates for LED lamps in extreme environments

LED light sources have proven to be energy-saving, long-lasting and thus economical light sources and are widely used in buildings, vehicles and street lighting but what about LED lamps in extreme environments ?. Light guides, reflectors and diffusers as well as lenses must be designed to make the best possible use of the LED light.

Covestro has been developing a customised portfolio of transparent, translucent, reflective, but also thermally conductive and flame-retardant grades of polycarbonate plastic for this purpose for years. In this way, the company supports more sustainable lighting technologies, to which the International Day of Light on 16 May 2021 is dedicated.

LED lighting in swimming pools

The operation of LED lamps under water places special demands on the materials used. In cooperation with the Brazilian swimming pool equipment supplier Ecopyre Lighting, Covestro developed an integrated solution with the thermally conductive polycarbonate Makrolon® TC. It is characterized by high dimensional stability during manufacture and operation of the lamps and thus prevents the ingress of water (Ingress Protection, IP).

The letters “TC” in the type designation stand for “thermally conductive” and indicate that the plastic also has good thermal conductivity. This makes it suitable – just like the other types in the TC portfolio – for efficient thermal management in which the heat generated by the LEDs is well dissipated. In addition, the plastic meets the chemical resistance required for use in swimming pool water.

Lenses for explosion-proof LED lamps

The highly transparent product Makrolon® LED5302 is even suitable for lenses in explosion-protected lamps, as demonstrated by a recent case study with safety technology provider R. Stahl. The lamps comply with categories 2 and 3 (for zones 1 and 21 and 2 and 22 respectively) of the EU ATEX directives1 for industrial environments where highly explosive dust and gas atmospheres may occur during normal operation. These include oil platforms, refineries, but also certain chemical plants.

R. Stahl AG, a German trendsetter for safety technology in potentially explosive atmospheres, was looking for an optical material solution for LED safety lighting that could be used worldwide. The choice fell on the transparent plastic Makrolon® LED5302, which enables light-focusing optics and can be used at higher temperatures of 60 to 85 degrees Celsius.

Polycarbonate is a thermoplastic that allows efficient development and production of optical parts for LED-operated lamps. The different types of Makrolon® can be used by injection moulding and extrusion. Stronger and lighter than glass, polycarbonate also enables savings in energy and CO2 emissions.

The Brokis Memory Lamp Series

The Brokis Memory Lamp collection awakens the imagination and beckons back to a carefree childhood. The wall and ceiling versions in different sizes, the wide range of colour options, and a selection of finishes give this lighting experience a large degree of versatility. The illusion of inflated balloons is flawless right down to the dangling string, which serves to switch the light on and off. This is beauty in its simplest and most persuasive form. The Memory collection by Brokis consists of ceiling and wall versions in three sizes. There are also sets that allow multiple lights to be combined on a single ceiling canopy. Unlike the other collections, Memory are not supplied with a light source.

Designer Boris Klimek awakens childhood memories with the Brokis Memory ceiling lamp. The magic with which children look at simple floating balloons is created once again by the special design of the Memory ceiling lamp. The inspiration for the design is unmistakable. It seems to have risen to the ceiling like a balloon and to stay there. This impression is perfected by the hanging down cord, which is used to switch on and off the Memory designer lamp. The lamp consists of high-quality glass, which is available in many different colours. It is perfectly suitable for the children’s room, but also makes the parents’ bedroom shine. The Czech manufacturer Brokis focuses on the medium glass for most of its designs – understandable, considering that Bohemia is home to some of the best glass craftsmen in the world. The Memory ceiling lamp is available in different sizes that can be perfectly combined with each other.

The new lamp collection Reflection: dissolved structures

Asger Risborg Jakobsen focuses attention on the essential components of a lamp: light source and shade. The designs of the lamp collection Reflection, a new addition to this year’s spring collection from Bolia, separate these two fundamental elements to accentuate them in a perfectly shaped way. The result: fascinating lamps of elegant design, with a timeless soft silhouette and full of playful inspiration.

The Reflection collection was developed with the ambition to create elegant, simple and timeless lamps that address and emphasize the fundamental characteristics of a lamp – light and shadow. To achieve this, designer Asger Risborg Jakobsen separated two defining elements of each lamp. Thus, the light source and shade create a play of fascinating reflections that give off a soft light.

The new lamp collection Reflection: dissolved structures

“The light source spreads a bright light, which is directed to where it is needed by the gentle curve of the lampshade. In my opinion, a lamp should provide enough light to satisfy the need for concentration, but at the same time also radiate warmth and coziness, so that it can highlight the beauty of its surroundings,” says Asger Risborg Jakobsen. He himself describes the Reflection lamps as “unconventional classics”.

Sculptural, tending to be timeless, yet revealing new perspective, Reflection fulfills its function comprehensively and without dazzling, with a light-footed look and solid structures. Extensive research and the creation of numerous prototypes made it possible to identify the most reduced dimensions and create a perfect silhouette.

“To approach timelessness, we must learn to understand the essence of an object and try to implement it in an honest and simple way,” the Danish designer continues. Reflection stems from the desire to create an object with sustainable qualities: the deliberately timeless and subtle colors chosen harmonize with a wide variety of interiors and create visual highlights.

Ingo Maurer presents finest gold leaf in a new dimension: The new lamp 24 Karat Blau Flat

Ingo Maurer introduces the new wall lamp 24 Karat Blue Flat, which effectively showcases gossamer Japanese gold leaf. For the first time, the manufactory continues the successful Karat product family with an ultra-flat version that can be mounted at a short distance from the wall. Thanks to individual panels that can be combined at will and aligned differently, the end customer creates his individual work of art with the 24 Karat Blue Flat. The lamp comes from designer Axel Schmid, part of the Ingo Maurer creative team for 23 years, who already developed the earlier models of the series.

The principle of the Ingo Maurer 24 Karat Blau Flat is based on an acrylic glass panel, which encloses wafer-thin beaten gold leaf and is mounted flat on the wall in front of the illuminant. In the development, designer Axel Schmid took advantage of the physical properties of the precious metal: beaten extremely thin, the pure gold allows only short-wave blue light to pass through, which is why the illuminant stands out bluish. Golden yellow light is reflected by the 24 carat blue flat and creates a warm atmosphere in the room.

Aesthetic wall arrangement: the user becomes a co-designer
The single panel of the wall lamp can be combined with other panels, with no limits to the imagination: Provided with four holes, they can be installed vertically, horizontally and also asymmetrically. The rods for suspension are effortlessly attached and fixed if necessary, so that the panels can not be stolen. The 24 Karat Blue Flat has a retrofit LED lamp with an E14 screw socket, which allows for an uncomplicated change of the illuminant. Even when switched off, the 24 Karat Blau Flat develops its radiance as a unique work of art on the wall that can be expanded at will.

“The 24 Karat Blue lamps with their warm light are among my personal favorites. By using a single panel, the 24 Karat Blau Flat allows us to offer a solution for situations where the lamp needs to be mounted as flat as possible on the wall,” says Claude Maurer, managing director of Ingo Maurer GmbH. “Thanks to the countless extension possibilities, it unfolds enormous design power. Very interesting is also the combination with other lights from the product family, through which light and room design from a cast are possible. This makes it attractive for use in private living spaces as well as in the contract sector,” adds Claude Maurer.

Finest gold leaf from Japan
The use of gold plays an important role in Ingo Maurer’s portfolio and has often been the subject of creative experimentation. This has resulted in both expansive installations and iconic lamps.

The gold leaf of the Ingo Maurer 24 Karat Blau Flat comes from Japan, where it is beaten 1/10,000 mm thin in a complex process. Designer Axel Schmid discovered the traditional gold leaf production of today’s supplier of Ingo Maurer GmbH in Ishikawa Prefecture during a scholarship in Japan. It was then that the first ideas of using the wafer-thin material for a lampshade emerged. “The valuable precious metal gold and the utility material plastic form an exciting contrast in the 24 Karat Blue Flat,” says Axel Schmid. “However, the combination of materials means that the gold does not lose its brilliance; both materials complement each other to create a product that is both noble and easy to care for.” Each panel has its own individual grain, as the thin layer of gold leaf is produced with precision craftsmanship to this day. The mechanical process drives the gold from the inside out, creating the unique texture.

The 24 Karat Blau Flat bathes its surroundings in atmospheric warm light and is versatile in use, individually or as a set. Designer Axel Schmid conceived the lamp for different spaces: Particularly flat mounted on the wall, the lamp is suitable for small room situations such as hallways or stairwells but also for installation above the dining table. Through the countless extension possibilities, however, it also comes into its own on large wall surfaces such as behind a counter, a reception desk or simply on the wall in the study, living room or bedroom. The lamp comes with drilling templates that assist in arranging the panels on the wall.

Fool a Table lamp with Brazilian temperament

luminis chief designer Fernando Prado was so fascinated by the movement of the standing man that he wanted to implement this principle for a lamp. The result is a table lamp that initially causes amazement. When it gets a nudge, it doesn’t fall over but starts to sway back and forth in a steady rhythm. It’s a pleasure to watch and all the more surprising when the lamp ends up standing still and straight as a die. A simple idea, a well-known principle, but a complex challenge to implement for a table lamp.

First and foremost, the lamp has to meet lumini’s usual demand for perfection in design and technology. The Brazilian manufacturer lumini, who produces all its lamps by hand, wanted to create something playful with the Lumini Fool. To achieve this, there was no compromise on the clear design; the playfulness lies solely in the movement.

Lumini fool table lamp
Lumini Fool table lamp

Weights in the crescent-shaped base ensure that the lamp can shift its centre of gravity and reliably swing back to its original position. The felt shade is very light and at the same time shockproof and robust. It allows a pleasant light diffusion and thanks to a dimmer, the light intensity can be adjusted in three steps. The base and shade are also available in various colour combinations from subtle to strong, so that the spirited lamp cuts a good figure in any environment.
If the movement is too much for you, simply place the lamp on the ring provided and fix it in place. In this way, it can either stand upright or at any inclination, securely and firmly. At the same time, this allows the light to be directed individually. If that doesn’t put you in a good mood.

The Brazilian lamp manufacturer lumini designs and produces lamps and lighting solutions for international architecture and design projects. Founded in 1979, the company has its production site in Sao Paulo and employs around 300 people. lumini stands for a perfect combination of design with the constant development of technically optimal solutions and has received numerous international awards for this. The company exports its products to 27 countries and has showrooms in Sao Paulo, Campinas, Rio de Janeiro and the capital Brasilia.
