The Foscarini Nile and Chiaroscura Lamps received the ADI Design Award

The permanent design watchdog once again selected Foscarini for its design excellence and pioneering spirit. These characteristic features of the brand are embodied in 2023 by the Nile and Chiaroscura luminaires, which were selected for the Lighting Design category. The Nile table lamp designed by Rodolfo Dordoni is a furnishing element with an impressive effect. It is already beautiful when switched off, but when switched on it reveals its true fascination. The light shines through the precious, hand-blown glass and streams through both sides of the diffuser onto the surface below. A luminaire sculpture in which opposing elements interact, united in a composition of volumes that seem to defy all the laws of gravity.
“I wanted a sculptural presence, a real diffuser of light, with a form that is not necessarily functional. I drew two overlapping volumes: the small marble base and the large glass diffuser. When I looked at them, the famous bust of the Egyptian Queen Nefertiti came to mind and that’s how I came up with the name: Nile.” – Rodolfo Dordoni

The Foscarini Chiaroscura is an elegant ceiling washlight that not only emits strong indirect light upwards, but also indirect light onto the wall or diffusely into the room. The slim design and its warm, inviting light make the floor lamp a versatile lighting object that enriches living and working spaces with attractive lighting effects and, thanks to its discreet presence, becomes a furnishing object with a strong character. Chiaroscura consists of three half arches that form a unique triangular cross-section. This design choice creates a balanced presence that can change depending on the viewing angle. The frame features a combination of matt and shiny surfaces to enhance the visual impact of the luminaire. It is made of pressed aluminum and PMMA, which create transparency and a pleasant diffusion of light.

The designer floor lamp was the result of a design challenge. The two designers Alberto Meda and Francesco Meda from Foscarini explored the possibilities of optimizing the functionality of a classic floor lamp that only emits indirect light upwards. The aim was to design a light and elegant housing that is itself fully illuminated. This was made possible by specially developed LED boards placed along the rod. Chiaroscura, available in the colors dark red and titanium, offers a variety of design options for room lighting and allows users to flexibly adapt to individual needs and requirements in terms of light and atmosphere.

The new Bover Pendant Lamp Aluet

The Bover Aluet pendant lamp was born out of the desire to design a linear lamp with a certain “presence” and substance. We thought that wood could bring sensory qualities and warmth to a linear lamp to cover rectangular spaces on work tables. Aluet is an extremely versatile lamp and can also be installed above bars or dining tables in both private and gastronomic environments. BOVER manufactures many of its products with the help of external specialists. In addition to the assembly teams in various specialist areas, BOVER has its own experienced and creative umbrella production team, which also produces large umbrellas purely by hand. The appearance of the umbrellas’ materials offers interior designers and furnishers plenty of scope to combine their creativity with BOVER products to create impressive room concepts. Lampshades have been a traditional part of the BOVER collection for many years and, in recent years, the company has enjoyed great success with contemporary designs. Around 45 men and women work to bring the Catalan spirit of enlightenment to the world.

The Table Lamp Fragile by the Marset Lighting

The Fragile LED table lamp from Marset combines simple geometric shapes in an unusual form with fascinating materiality. It was designed by Jaume Ramírez in 2023.

The table lamp is made of glass and consists of four elements: Inside is a vertical, tubular diffuser that extends along its entire length and is filled with light from the integrated LED. It rests on a base made of transparent polycarbonate and is surrounded by a conical shade and a spherical base made of transparent glass. Apart from the luminous core, the entire Fragile luminaire is transparent. As a result, it almost merges with its surroundings and appears almost disembodied. Its lightness and fragility contrast excitingly with the clarity of its voluminous shape, which is much wider than the narrow diffuser would suggest at first glance.

The integrated LEDs are characterized by a particularly warm white colour temperature of 2200 K and provide lighting that resembles soft, atmospheric candlelight. The brightness can be dimmed continuously. This warm, soft light makes Fragile ideal for living rooms, restaurants and bedrooms.

Fascinated by timeless design, designer Jaume Ramírez is interested in the archetypal table lamp with a shade that spreads light in all directions. This is the starting point from which he reflects and experiments to propose a new glass design with more streamlined shapes. The Fragile lamp is a mixture of geometric shapes. A cone and a sphere are arranged to hold a cylinder that emits ambient light from below.

In its form we find remnants of the past, in its material we find emotion. The glass not only reveals the light source, it also speaks of purity, lightness and how this design blends in with its surroundings. Its structure seems to stand effortlessly, a very serious achievement where everything is in plain sight. The cylinder shades its warm, diffused and gradual light.

The Marset Fragile is a synthesis of past and present. It is reminiscent of symbols of the past, such as oil lamps, which also shine from below, or candles, but its designer uses the language of glass to express the fragility of the present moment. This is why this new design pays homage to the table lamp. A lamp with a long history that, by using a material such as glass, surprises us once again with the delicacy of its forms.

The Brokis Convex Lamps made of Glass

The Brokis Convex collection experiments with BROKISGLASS and makes use of its specific properties and processing methods. Designed and manufactured in the form of a convex lens, it pushes the boundaries of function, visual representation, and shaping of this unique and vibrant material. Together with a minimalist, precisely crafted body, it creates an unobtrusive yet unconventional luminaire. The utilitarian design, which highlights the beauty and optical properties of the glass, is well suited to a broad range of applications in both residential and commercial spaces. The Convex collection comprises a pendant and a wall light, each available in two sizes, whereas the wall variant can also be mounted on the ceiling. Choose from clear triplex opal, or a combination of clear triplex opal and grey triplex opal, where the darker fragments gradually transition to lighter towards the centre of the glass.

The classic Serien Lighting App Wall LED Lamp

Clever light, creative diversity! A formally simple LED light cube shows what it’s made of. With its double-layered front surface, it opens up maximum design freedom. The range of available standard fronts alone extends from different textured surfaces and soft matt colors to mirrored surfaces and those with optical effects. If you want to make a statement or convey a message, APP can be personalized with individual prints. Notes, room numbers, company colors … The choice is yours.

The Serien Lighting APP wall light is not just an energy-efficient light source. Its customizable front surface, which provides visual depth and plasticity, also opens up unimagined design freedom. APP thus becomes a potential information carrier, guidance system and design element. The latest long-life technology is contained in two high-intensity replaceable LED boards. These emit intense light symmetrically upwards and downwards, which is reflected into the room via the wall, ceiling and floor. The light falling through the side of the cuboid, on the other hand, is gently diffused and completely glare-free! The choice of front surface has no influence on the room light itself, as its carrier plate is opaque. An efficient heat sink on the back of the cuboid ensures heat dissipation and is also a design element.

Whether arranged in rows, graphically or in a deliberately free arrangement – APP is predestined for multifunctional use. In private rooms, hotels, hospitals, office buildings, corridors, entrance areas and staircases, which APP transforms into conceptual lighting installations.

The Serien Lighting App Wall LED is a wall light whose design you can determine yourself. This is because the front surface is available in many different versions. Whether textured like “Broken Ice” or “Comb”, fluorescent or with a reflective surface (Mirror): You decide in which design the App Wall presents itself. For this, it received the Design Plus Award at Light+Building 2016. The choice of surface has no influence on the lighting effect. The wall light from German manufacturer Serien Lighting is made of high-quality aluminum and polycarbonate.

Light Design with the Ingo Maurer Bulb Lamp

The light bulb has been a constant source of inspiration for the lighting designers of Ingo Maurer. Ingo Maurer’s career began in 1966 with the “Bulb”, a tribute to the light bulb. With ‘b.bulb’, Ingo Maurer is now launching a new generation of the ‘Bulb’ family. In keeping with the megatrend of mobility, it is a battery-operated version of the design classic. As a mobile companion, it follows its owner everywhere, from the bedroom to the living room, to the terrace or a picnic in the country. Its flexibility comes not only from its rechargeable battery, but also from its shatterproof glass head and splash-proof protection. Like the original from 1966, the 20 cm tall “b.bulb” is made of noble materials such as a chrome-plated aluminium base and a glass body. In contrast to the “Ingo Maurer Bulb“, the latter is not transparent but matt and thus provides a warm, soft light. Thanks to “dim to warm” technology, the “b.bulb” adapts to any lighting situation. The efficient LED technology ensures that the battery lasts up to 10 hours at full power. The battery as well as the LED unit and glass head are available as spare parts and can be replaced as the components are mostly screwed together and not glued or welded. The “b.bulb” is almost completely dismantleable and recyclable into its components such as the aluminium base and lamp head made of glass, metal and electronics. “We attach great importance to sustainability in our new products, which is why recycling and purity of type play an increasingly important role,” explains Claude Maurer, Managing Director of Ingo Maurer.

It all began with the “Ingo Maurer Bulb” from 1966. It was the starting signal for his work as a product designer. The oversized homage to the light bulb was created in Venice. “My father liked to tell about the moment of inspiration: after a fantastic meal and a bottle of red wine, he was lying on the bed in his cheap hotel room. Above him floated a naked 15-watt light bulb whose beauty touched him. He immediately fell in love with this mixture of poetry and technology – a love that stayed with him for the rest of his life,” Claude Maurer describes the decisive moment. He developed the idea to exaggerate the bulb, went to Murano and had a glass and a base made there – thus an icon of the Pop Art era was born. The oversized light bulb was included in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York as early as 1969. Again and again, different glasses, sizes and colours as well as special editions with handmade insect models completed the series. Especially popular was the 56 cm high “Giant Bulb”, which was also launched in the 1960s. The original “Bulb” table lamp from 1966 is still produced today with mouth-blown crystal glass from Murano.

Ingo Maurer GmbH has been an owner-managed company for the development and production of extraordinary design lamps for over 50 years. In addition, the company has made its mark internationally with the realisation of design commissions in both the private and public sectors. Among the best-known designs for series production are Bulb (1966), the Ingo Maurer YaYaHo low-voltage system (1984) and the Ingo Maurer Lucellino wing lamp (1992). The lighting of the “Westfriedhof” (1998) and “Münchner Freiheit” (2009) underground stations in Munich, as well as the “Flying to Peace” pendulum for the Frankfurt Trade Fair (2018) and the “Silver Cloud” for the Munich Residenztheater (2019) are just a few highlights on the long list of commissioned works and spectacular one-off pieces for private clients and public buildings. Following the death of founder Ingo Maurer on 21 October 2019, Maurer’s daughter Claude, who had already been managing director at his side since 2011, is leading the family business in close coordination with the team that has grown over many years.

The Catellani Smith Ettorino lamp series

“In 2004, color found its way into our catalog for the first time. The collection was called PostKrisi. The color stood for rebirth and cheerfulness. Today, this color is celebrating its comeback”. The Ettorino lamps are also available in the classic black and white versions and, in the “colorful” version, play with the elegant combination of primary colors that mix blue, yellow and red. The development of an innovative kinematic system, filed as a patent, preceded these new articulated lamps with an essential design, personalized with surprising details. All the lamps are characterized by the presence of a red silhouette, a functional detail with a dancing shape. Ettorino T was developed as a desk lamp to provide correct illumination of the workstation, guaranteed by the mobility and rotation of the lamp. The Catellani & Smith Ettorino series includes table, floor, and clamp lamps. All lamps in this series are highly adjustable. The lamp arm and lamp head can be rotated and tilted individually. Depending on how the lamps are adjusted, the height of the lamp heads changes. Catellani Smith Ettorino lamps can be dimmed using a dimmer on the power cord or the lamp rod. The light source is an LED with a color temperature of 2,700 Kelvin (extra warm white).

The Class collection from the lighting manufacturer Vibia

Class was designed with great attention to detail by Sebastian Herkner. Its sturdy stand curves elegantly to embrace the grooved, cylindrical diffuser, giving the design an industrial aesthetic and a captivating presence. Whether illuminating a garden, walkway or outdoor area, the collection is a long-lasting solution that casts an inviting glow over its surroundings. Sebastian Herkner found the inspiration for Class in the classic lamppost, which he reinvented by borrowing from early 20th century designs and giving it the intimate effect of indoor lighting. The result is a “modern interpretation of the torch” that bathes the surrounding greenery in a soft, diffused and indirect light. As if reflecting the surrounding nature, Class exudes a “botanical character”, especially the version with two asymmetrical diffusers, which is available as a wall or floor lamp. “Its vertical structure and gentle curve are reminiscent of reeds or grass, but not in an obvious way,” he emphasises. Harmony and intuition are the driving forces behind Herkner’s creative processes, and Class is no exception. “It is a balance between precision and craftsmanship,” notes the designer.Elegant and timeless, the refined silhouette of this cylindrical vibia lamp gently meets an impressive study of materiality in aluminium, borosilicate glass and matt polycarbonate.
